What frame fits, and what a mount leaves
The answer
No. Every print here is sold as an unframed sheet. All three sizes are standard European frame sizes, so the sheet fits a ready-made frame with no mount and no trimming. That is why the shop sells these sizes: in a scan of 144 of Europe's best-selling print listings, 30×40 cm was offered on every one and 50×70 cm on all but two.
What frame fits a 50×70 cm print?
A 50×70 cm one. Sizes here are named for the sheet, so you buy the size already in the print's name. The product photographs show a frame only to give a sense of scale.
What are these sizes in inches?
Rounded to a tenth, which is close enough to buy against.
| Size | Inches |
|---|---|
| 70×100 cm | 27.6 × 39.4 in |
| 50×70 cm | 19.7 × 27.6 in |
| 30×40 cm | 11.8 × 15.7 in |
Can you put a smaller print in a larger frame?
Yes, with a mount cut to the sheet. The table gives the border the mount leaves for each pairing, which is worth knowing before you buy one. Every print comes in every size, so the border is the same whichever print you choose. The last column names one as an example.
| Sheet | In a frame of | Border at the sides | Border top and bottom | A print at that size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50×70 cm | 70×100 cm | 10 cm | 15 cm | Patch |
| 30×40 cm | 70×100 cm | 20 cm | 30 cm | Clearing |
| 30×40 cm | 50×70 cm | 10 cm | 15 cm | Thicket |
Why is the mount border wider at the top and bottom?
Because the sizes have slightly different proportions. 30×40 cm is 1:1.333 and 50×70 cm is 1:1.400, so a smaller sheet centred in a larger frame cannot have an even border on all four sides. A mount cut for equal borders would have to crop the sheet. The figures above are what a centred mount gives you.
Does the frame cover part of the image?
No. Every sheet has a 5 mm unprinted border on all four edges, which is about what a rebate covers. 70×100 cm prints 690 × 990 mm, 50×70 cm prints 490 × 690 mm, 30×40 cm prints 290 × 390 mm. The lip rests on that border.
What exactly arrives?
One sheet of 200 gsm matte paper, rolled in a rigid tube so it is never folded. There is no frame, mount or glass in the tube.
